Celebrating the training of Africa's next generation of surgeons.

News

We're delighted that our award-winning e-learning platform, PAPSEP, has just completed its first 3-year cycle.

PAPSEP - the Pan-African Paediatric Surgery e-Learning Programme - is the first ever pan-African training platform for children's surgery. Free to use, the platform is enabling paediatric surgical trainees in Africa to access a range of high-quality surgical training.

The platform is the product of a hugely successful collaboration between Kids Operating Room, RCSI Institute of Global Surgery, West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

These partners share a firm belief; that knowledge knows no borders. Through our partnership, we have gathered the knowledge of more than 60 world-class paediatric surgeons, and brought their expertise to over 160 trainees from 21 different countries across Africa on a weekly basis.

And we're so pleased to be celebrating the three year anniversary of its launch - marking the completion of the platform's first full cycle.

The resources these trainees are accessing are empowering them to provide life-changing care to children - and will continue to for years to come. And the need for this skill could not be any more urgent.

Every year, 5 times more children die from issues that could have been treated by surgery, than from HIV, Malaria and TB combined. And when 9 out of 10 children in low- and middle-income countries have 0 access to safe, timely surgery, this leaves them completely vulnerable from conditions that could have been treated in the operating room.

The next cycle of PAPSEP begins shortly, and we can't wait to bring this life-saving knowledge to even more local surgeons across Africa, which will ultimately save even more children's lives across the continent.
